Rockstar hacked again: ShinyHunters group claims the attack
A second cyberattack in a few years, this time through a third-party cloud provider. Rockstar confirms but downplays it.
Rockstar Games has been hit by another cyberattack. A group calling itself ShinyHunters claims to have broken into servers run by Anodot, a third-party cloud provider used by the studio, threatening to publish the stolen data online if its demands weren't met.
Rockstar confirmed the breach in a statement, calling it "not material" to company or player data, and said it has no intention of paying the requested ransom.
According to some security researchers, the stolen files appear to center on analytics used to monitor Rockstar's online operations — service performance, support workflows and internal business metrics — with references to GTA Online and Red Dead Online, plus possible fraud-detection and anti-cheat testing data.
It's the second attack Rockstar has suffered in recent years, following the massive 2022 leak. A curious detail: the attack landed right as the studio laid off more than 30 staffers in the UK and elsewhere, accused of discussing "confidential information" in a public forum — layoffs heavily criticized by those who see them as retaliation against unionization efforts.
