GTA 6: 150+ more details — what press previews revealed beyond the Extended Look

An 80-hour story, 600,000 NPC animations, a Dead Eye-like mechanic from Red Dead: everything that emerged from journalists' exclusive Rockstar North previews.

The Extended Look broadcast on Netflix wasn't the only source of information: in the weeks before, Rockstar invited several outlets and content creators to Rockstar North for hands-on sessions. Previews from those sessions were published right after the Netflix event, bringing the total of newly shared details to over 150. Here are the most significant ones that weren't in the official video.

An approximately 80-hour story

According to Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's co-studio head, his latest campaign playthrough took roughly 80 hours. The narrative structure will be organized into chapters, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, with pacing that encourages exploring Leonida rather than rushing straight to the next objective.

An unprecedented level of detail

One technical figure gives a sense of the project's scale: GTA 6 reportedly contains over 600,000 NPC animations, compared to roughly 55,000 in GTA V — more than ten times as many, to make Leonida's world feel far more alive and reactive.

A mechanic reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption's "Dead Eye"

Among the most interesting gameplay additions, a system echoing Red Dead Redemption's well-known Dead Eye has reportedly been integrated into GTA 6 — a targeted slow-motion effect during firefights, never before seen in a numbered GTA entry.

A new "Focus" mechanic

Also confirmed: a feature called Focus, which lets players spot nearby objects and details, also useful for moving more carefully and avoiding police — a concept reminiscent of "investigation" modes seen in other modern open-world games.

Jason and Lucia's relationship is optional

An interesting narrative detail: the romantic bond between the two protagonists reportedly isn't forced, but optional — players would have some say in how (or whether) that part of the story develops.

A split health bar

Compared to previous entries, the health bar has reportedly been split into multiple segments — a change suggesting a more detailed damage system than GTA V's single bar.

A more complex police recognition system

Previews confirm police will be able to recognize the player in multiple ways (not just through the classic cameras), and that areas where crimes are committed will stay marked on the map. Wanted-level stars will also come in different colors depending on severity.

More activities, more details

Additional confirmed activities: fishing, wrestling, and a gym for both protagonists, on top of what was already shown in the Extended Look (basketball, diving, jet skiing, and more). Stores can also be robbed together by Jason and Lucia as a duo.

A small soundtrack tribute

Among the details found during a frame-by-frame analysis of the video: a double musical nod to Phil Collins, who previously played himself in GTA Vice City Stories back in 2006 — an easter egg for the series' longtime fans.

With over 150 details now shared between the Extended Look and press previews, GTA 6 is likely the most documented game before launch in the series' history. We'll keep updating this page and yesterday's article as more analysis emerges.
