Vice City isn't invented from nothing: it's a portrait — exaggerated but recognizable — of the real Miami of the 1980s, a decade in which the city underwent one of the most dramatic transformations in its history.
A city in chaos that became an icon
In the early 1980s, Miami was anything but glamorous: waves of migration, sky-high crime rates, and a cocaine trafficking boom (the era of the so-called "Cocaine Cowboys") had turned the city into one of the most violent in America. Paradoxically, it was this chaos that produced the aesthetic we now associate with Vice City: easy money, nightclubs, sports cars, and an explosion of pastel Art Deco colors.
Scarface and Miami Vice, the stated inspirations
A Rockstar Games co-founder shared in an interview that the main inspirations for the original GTA: Vice City (2002) were the film Scarface (1983) and the TV series Miami Vice, along with personal memories of an '80s childhood. The game's Little Havana district directly echoes the film's settings, while the pastel palette, police cars, and even some hidden collectibles pay direct homage to the TV show.
Ocean Drive, the beating heart
The pastel Art Deco buildings seen in trailers and official photos directly echo the real Ocean Drive in Miami Beach — the same one shown in the photo at the top of our Characters page. It's one of the few neighborhoods in the world where 1930s-40s Art Deco architecture has been preserved almost intact, and it's become synonymous with the "Miami" aesthetic in popular imagination, GTA included.
