With GTA 6, Rockstar abandons GTA V's multi-protagonist structure for the first time, returning to a duo — but the choice of Jason and Lucia isn't a simple throwback, it's a shift in narrative perspective.
Lucia: the series' first true female protagonist
Lucia Caminos is the most narratively significant character: she's the first non-optional female protagonist in the main series' history (GTA V let you play as a woman in GTA Online, but the three story protagonists were all men). Raised learning to defend herself from a young age, she's released from Leonida penitentiary after protecting her family — a starting point that promises more nuanced writing than the series' usual criminal archetypes.
Jason: the other half, not the lead
Jason Duval, a former soldier turned drug courier, isn't presented as the "main character" with Lucia in a supporting role — the two are written as equal co-protagonists, with their relationship (inspired by the Bonnie & Clyde dynamic) as the story's true engine.
Why two instead of three
Choosing two protagonists instead of GTA V's three likely allows for more intimate, focused writing, with less spread across parallel storylines. Switching between Jason and Lucia will be built around missions designed specifically for one or the other, not just gameplay variety.
