GTA 6 vs GTA 5: all the key differences

Thirteen years separate the two games, the longest gap in the series' history. Here's what actually changes, separating official confirmations from rumors.

GTA 5 launched in September 2013. GTA 6 arrives November 19, 2026: thirteen years apart, the longest gap ever recorded between two numbered entries in the series. It's natural to wonder what actually changes. Here's a comparison, separating what Rockstar has confirmed from what remains rumor or unverified leak.

Protagonists: from three to two, but more intertwined

GTA 5 relied on a three-protagonist structure (Michael, Franklin, Trevor), each with their own storyline. GTA 6 centers on a duo, Jason and Lucia — the first non-optional female protagonist in the main series' history. Their relationship, inspired by the Bonnie & Clyde dynamic, is the story's central thread, not just a gameplay device for varying perspectives.

Map: more regions, no official number

Rockstar has confirmed the return of Vice City within a new fictional state called Leonida, inspired by Florida, with at least six distinct regions differing in aesthetic and atmosphere. However, there is no official figure on the map's size: estimates circulating online (some claiming a map "2.5 times" larger than Los Santos) are community extrapolations, not data confirmed by Rockstar — treat them with caution.

Technology: built for SSD, no old-gen

Unlike GTA 5, which spanned three console generations, GTA 6 launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PS4/Xbox One version. This lets Rockstar leverage next-gen SSDs for near-instant loading and seamless map transitions, along with more advanced lighting (ray tracing) and more natural animations thanks to new motion capture techniques.

Gameplay: what the leaks say (unverified)

The August 18, 2026 gameplay leak (never officially confirmed by Rockstar) suggests some changes from GTA 5: a stamina bar during hand-to-hand combat, a system that would track player behavior, and a wanted-level indicator reportedly reaching six stars instead of the traditional five. These are plausible details consistent with the series' evolution, but remain unconfirmed until Rockstar shows them officially.

Tomorrow's Extended Look, August 27, should clarify several of these points with official material. We'll update this comparison accordingly.
