GTA 5 and the Rockstar phenomenon: the numbers behind one of gaming's best-sellers
230 million copies, over 400 million for the whole franchise: the data behind the massive anticipation for GTA 6.
To understand how high the bar is set for GTA 6, look no further than GTA 5's numbers — a game released in 2013 that, thirteen years later, is still selling like it launched yesterday.
230 million copies, and climbing
According to the latest figures released by Take-Two Interactive during its August 7, 2026 shareholder meeting, GTA 5 has reached 230 million copies sold worldwide — 5 million more than the 225 million reported just six months earlier. It's the second best-selling video game in history, behind only Minecraft.
A franchise past 400 million copies
Adding up every entry in the series, the Grand Theft Auto franchise has surpassed 400 million copies distributed overall, cementing itself as one of the most profitable entertainment brands in existence. GTA 5 alone accounts for more than half of that total.
GTA Online: the real money machine
Much of GTA 5's commercial longevity comes down to GTA Online, the multiplayer component that continues to receive regular updates more than a decade after launch. Player recurrent spending (in-game purchases) grew 23% year-over-year, with GTA Online alone up 27% — numbers that explain why Rockstar is in no rush to "replace" GTA 5 while it keeps generating revenue at this level.
